Purified, Distilled, and Regular Water – What is the Difference?
Hydration is absolutely essential for good health. In fact, it is arguably the most important thing. However, while we all know that drinking water is essential, there is a further question that needs to be answered – what type of water should you drink?
Naturally, we are not talking here about how to be sure that water is safe. Rather, we’re talking about the different types of drinkable water out there and what is the best. There are three main types to consider – purified water, distilled water, and regular water. They can all hydrate you well, and they all certainly confer health benefits. But which is best?
Synergy Science, a company specializing in innovative water products such as hydrogen water and purified water, recommend that before you can answer that question, it is important to know what the difference between the three is.
So, What Is the Difference?
Here follows then a rundown of the different types of water you can drink, hopefully allowing you to make an informed decision about which is best.
Regular Water
Let us start with the most basic kind of water – regular tap water. The most important thing to know about this hydration option is that there isn’t really any one type of regular water. You can get it from the faucet in your home or you can buy it from the store. And furthermore, the type of water coming out of your faucet will depend on the reservoir it is being drawn from. The type of water you get from the store will similarly depend on where it is sourced. “Regular” water, therefore, is pretty diverse stuff.
The Health Benefits of Regular Water
So, the health benefits of regular water will naturally depend upon its mineral content, and this will depend upon what its source is. The best way to proceed therefore is simply to research this and see.
Purified Water
Purified water, as the name suggests, is water that has been filtered or otherwise processed to remove as many impurities as possible. In other words, it is water that aims to get as close as possible to a glass of water that is purely H2O molecules. It is usually produced from groundwater or tap water and it’s worth noting that there are several devices on the market that will allow you to purify water yourself.
Health Benefits of Purified Water
Purified water can be free of a few potentially harmful substances which can be found in other types of water. Bacteria and chemical pollutants are the two substances that could be found in regular water and which could be harmful. However, it should also be noted that many of regular water’s impurities are actually good for you.
Distilled Water
Distilled water is a type of purified water; it has just been purified in a very specific way. Distilled water is purified by means of the distillation process, which involves evaporating the water and then recondensing it. As it becomes gas, it leaves nearly all impurities behind. It is then collected again, as it condenses, within a sterile environment.
Health Benefits of Distilled Water
The health benefits of distilled water stem from the fact that it is very effectively purified – you cannot get closer to pure H2O. The downsides of this (see above) still apply, but the ability to remove impurities that other methods cannot (e.g., chlorine) is what makes purified water a very sound health option.
Such are the three contenders when it comes to water options. But whatever you choose, just be sure to drink enough of it.
